Wonderland was a fantastical world, bizarre, illogical, often dangerous, absurd, and strangely beautiful. The garden was brown and tangled, its statues broken and overgrown, and the mossy fountain, which once stood tall, was broken and silent. There was a strange bellow/sneezing sound as a green pig dashed past, rushing under a bench. Sitting on this bench was an ugly woman with a large head, who was rocking another pig like a baby. Thin birds with stalk legs walked on the bench, all around her. Behind her, flowers had gaunt, haunted human faces. An odd looking animal, which seemed to be a cross between a lizard and a badger, with a corkscrew nose, shifted in the dirt beneath them. In the air, dragonflies, horseflies, and enormous gnats fought, ignoring the world below.
Angelica looked around the world, transfixed by fascination. She walked forward, glancing all around her, trying to take everything in at one. “Curiouser and curiouser.”
“Va, I told you she was the right Angelica.” a voice behind her said. Angelica quickly turned, half expecting to see her uncle standing before her. Instead she saw a collection of animals, along with two people. There was a dodo bird, with glasses and holding the bow to a violin, a young woman, who was about the size of a mouse, wearing a fitted white top and pink vest with brown breeches and boots, who had a mouse’s ears and tail, a puffin wearing a bow-tie, a boy with short golden hair (with an odd double curl, which reminded Angelica of her fratello, Feliciano, curl), rabbit ears and tail, who was wearing a dark blue waistcoat and brown breaches (along with fancy leather boots). The two people were young boys, certainly no older than ten. They both had dark red hair and brilliant blue eyes, although the smaller of the two wore glasses. The twins wore the same outfit also, a white shirt with short dark brown pants, no shoes on their feet.
And they all looked at her, studding her critically.
“I’m not convinced.” The mouse said, crossing her arms over her chest. Her accent was unmistakably British.
The rabbit-boy threw up his hands, annoyance in his voice as he spoke. “Well va, that’s gratitude for you! You do not know how difficult it was to find her! Trailing after one Angelica after the next for weeks on end…va, not to mention almost being eaten by large drooling creatures waving meat cleavers at me! And you would not believe how uncivilized the animals are up there va. They wonder around barking, entirely unclothed, growling and barking and yipping. And they do their…ahem…shukm, in public ve. Can you imagine? I had to avert my eyes! Va, I’m still very upset by the entire experience.”
“Well then, let’s have a look at her.” The dodo said, removing her glasses to study Angelica. “She could be the right one.”
“And if she was, she might be.” One of the twins said.
“But if she isn’t, she ain’t.”The other, with glasses, replied. Angel gave him a strange look. He sounded like a young girl, but he looked like a boy.
“But if she were so, she would be.”
“But she isn’t. No how.” The boy shook his head, causing his glasses to slip down hisnose a bit.
Angelica frowned. “How can I be the wrong Angelica when it’s my dream?” she asked, hands resting on her hips. “And who are you to say I’m the wrong Angelica?”
The children rushed over to her. The boy grabbed her hand one hand, while his brother took the other. “I’m Sean, she’s Elena.”
“Contrariwise, I’m Elena, he’s Sean.”
Angelica staired at them. “V-Vi, sei una ragazza?” the two shared a confused look.
“Eh, what did ya say?” the child asked innocently.
The dodo bird put her glasses back on. “We should consult Yao.” she said, turning to the others, and drawing the children’s attention away from Angelica.
“Eggsactly.” the puffin chirped.
Sean held out an arm to the Sicilian. “I’ll escort you.” he said, smiling widely. His sister glared and pulled Angel away.
“It’s not being your turn!” she shouted. Sean frowned and tugged Angel back.
“Leave off!”
“Let go!”
The two yelled at eachother while pulling Angel in between them. “Mio dio….are they always like this?” she asked as she was violently tugged.
“It’s a family trait ve.” said the rabbit as he hit the two children. “And you can both escort her.”
The siblings glared at eachother, before letting go. Angel gave a sigh of relief as the tugging stopped, and the two grabbed an arm.
The small group then started off to Absolem, the flowers whispering among themselves as they passed. “It can’t be her.” they said. “She looks nothing like Angelica. She’s not even wearing the right dress.”
Angelica sent a harsh glare to the flowers, the look on her face telling them to shut it. They each made a face back, but were quiet. “Who is this Yao?” she asked, tearing her eyes away from the once again whispering flowers.
“He’s wise. He’s absolute va.” said the rabbit. “He’s Yao Wang.”
After a quiet a bit of walking (Angel judged they had been walking for about two hours now, by the position of the sun) the small group entered a mushroom forest, surrounded by a blue mist. Angel coughed as the strange colored mist hit her.
“Who are you aru?” A voice asked from…somewhere. Angelica couldn’t be sure where, as the blue was clouding her vision. However, soon enough, the silhouette of a man came into view, sitting where the mist was coming from.
The Rabbit pushed Angel forward.“Go on va.” he said. She shot him a look, before she found herself stumbling forward, nearly hitting the mushroom.
“Vi, damn it.” she huffed, stepping back and fixing her dress. “Yao Wang?” she took another step back to look at the man sitting on top of the mushroom.
If Angelica had thought the others were strange, this man took the prize. At first glance, he looked oriental, Chinese by the red robes he wore. He sat, smoking a hookah, eyes closed. He looked normal enough, until you looked to his bottom half, which took the form of the lower part of a caterpillar. A blue one to be exact. Angel had to suppress a giggle as the man’s (caterpillar’s? She didn’t really know what to call him) bottom half nearly fell off the mushroom.
Angelica cleared her throat. “Vi, Yao Wang?” she asked, louder this time. The man opened his brown eyes to stare down at her.
“You’re not Yao Wang aru. I’m Yao Wang. The question is, who are you aru?” He blew a blue smoke ring in her face, causing the Sicilian to cough.
“Angelica. I’m Angelica vi.” she replied, waving her hand to get the smoke away from her.
“We shall see aru.”
A frown appeared on her face. “What do you mean by that vi?” she nearly shouted. “I ought to know who I am.”
“Yes, you ought aru. Yúchǔn de nǚhái.” He blew another smoke ring, before looking at the rabbit. “Bring out the Oraculum aru.”
The rabbit nodded, before unrolling an ancient piece of parchment which had been lying on a toadstool. “Va, the Oraculum.” He turned to face Angel, “A Calendrical Compendium of Underland.” He smiled and held out a hand to the girl. “Come and see.”
Angelica took his hand, and let him pull her closer to the parchment as the other animals gathered around. She frowned. “Vi, it’s a calendar.” she said, looking over days, each with its own title and picture.
“Compendium aru. It tells of each and every day since the beginning aru.” chimed the man on the mushroom as he continued smoking. Angelica shot him a glare.
“Today is Griblig day, in the time of the Red Queen va.” the rabbit said quickly, pointing to the illustration for that day. Angel found her attention pulled from the smoking caterpillar to the parchment. It showed them all, her, the rabbit, the twins, her little band of misfits peering over the Oraculum while Yao watched in the background.
“Show her the Frabjous day aru.”
“Frabjous being the day you slay the Jabberwocky.” Sean informed the brunette.
“Vi, slay the what?” She gave the boy a confused look, before turning her attention back to the parchment that everyone was now looking at.
The picture in front of her was moving, which shocked the Italian. In it, a large dragon, for it could be described no other way, wearing a vest was coming down upon a brave knight. The knight held a shining sword up to the monster, which tried to flatten her with it’s tail.
“That being you there with the Vorpal sword.” Elena said smiling up at Angel, as if the Sicilian was some sort of hero.
“No other swords can kill the Jabberwocky. No how.” Her brother chimed in.
“If it ain’t Vorpal, he ain’t dead!”
The two children were hushed as the animation continued. The knight and the dragon were still fighting, with the monster seeming to be winning. She watched in shock and awe as the knight swung the sword around, reveling herself.
Angelica backed away, scared of what she had seen. Yes, it had been her, but the Angelica in the Oraculum was more bloodthirsty then she could ever be. “T-That’s not me vi!”
“I know!” shouted the dormouse, crossing her arms over her chest and glaring at Angelica.
The rabbit turned to the Chinese man on the mushroom. “Va, resolve this for us Absolem. Is she the right Angelica?”
Brown eyes met brown as the caterpillar studied the young woman. “Not hardly aru.” he blew some more smoke, covering himself from view.
“I told you!” There was a tough of smug triumph in the dormouse’s voice.
“Oh dear va….”The poor rabbit bit at his fingers nervously.
“I said so!” Elena poked her brother’s side.
“No. You said she would be if she was!” her brother poked her back, and soon the two children were fighting again.
“Little imposter!” Huffed the flowers as they bent down to look at her. “Pretending to be Angelica. She should be ashamed.”
“Va, I was so certain of you…”
Angelica backed away from the animals, who were all glaring at her, as if it was somehow her fault she wasn’t the person they were looking for. “Vi, I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be the wrong Angelica…Wait, this is my dream.” she said, a hint of triumph in her voice. How could she forget that? “I’m going to wake up now and you all will disappear.” She closed her eyes and pinched her arm. After a moment she opened her eyes again. The creatures were still there. “Curioso…” She closed her eyes and pinched herself again, with the same results as before. She frowned. “Vi, pinching usually does the trick…”
The blond mouse pulled a sharp hat pin from her scabbard. “I could stick you if you think that would help.”
“It actually might vi. Grazie.”
“My pleasure.” She stabbed the taller woman’s ankle as heard as possible.
Angelica let out a surprised and pained ‘vi’, but it came out as a loud and thunderous roar. She looked at them. “That’s wasn’t me vi.” She said quickly before a large creature crashed through a high wall. It was the size of a large bear, with the head of a bull dog. It’s fur, which should have been a light grey with dark spots, was filthy with dirt and blood. It roared, showing off its blood-stained, broken, shark-like teeth. Angel stepped back, partly out of fear, and partly because it stank worse than anything she had ever smelt.
“Bandersnatch!” Sean shouted, and everyone, including Angelica, ran. Most were intercepted by red and black playing cards, the Red Knights, wearing a red heart in flames, the Red Queen’s crest. The animals were thrown into a caged wagon, protesting shouts and squeals erupting from each of them.
One grabbed the leg of the rabbit boy. “Va! Let go!” He shouted, although it made no difference as he was just thrown into the cart with the others.
Angelica ran down the garden path, the Bandersnatch right behind her. Fear shot through the Sicilian, but she stopped. “Wait…It’s only a dream vi. Nothing can hurt me.” She told herself, turning to face the monster.
The dormouse peeked out from behind a tree. “What the bloody hell is she doing?” she asked, drawing her hatpin.
The Bandersnatch opened its drooling mouth wide, giving Angelica a great view of it’s teeth. She packed up, muttering “Can’t hurt me.”
The dormouse jumped onto the Bandersnatch, and pulled herself up to the top of its head. “You git!” She shouted at Angelica. “Run!” she drove her hatpin into the beast’s eyes, and pulled it out, taking the entire eye out. It roared, whipping out, and raking Angelica’s arm. The pain pulled her out of her shock, and ran.
The Knave of Hearts rode though the now damaged garden. He scanned ground, before a small smirk grew on his face. He picked up the now abandoned Oraculum. He opened it, and a look of alarm crossed his face. He quickly rolled it back up and threw it into his saddle bag, before galloping off.
