AN1: historical accuracy in any point of the description is potentially a problem. I’m mostly going along with what I can find to try and explain this thing that’s been bouncing around in my head, but I don’t have a lot of details and don’t think I plan on going farther than this.
I'm not sure if any part of this will be 'cannon' for her character.
Yeah the history is rough and shaky and overly simplified… but this is as well as I can explain what’s been bouncing around in my head…

Carina Jones has a secret. It’s a secret she’s kept to herself for seventeen and thirty four years. She’s not shared this secret with any of her sisters, nor any of her brothers, nor her fathers. She hasn’t shared this secret with her friends, nor her mother. Her secret is Aveline Peyton, her secret is Carina Jones.
Aveline Peyton was Seventeen and Four-Hundred Thirteen years old. She was born in 1994 to a mother who was on her last hope and a father who prayed nightly for this child to survive and come into this world to be loved. He passed away before she could really remember, but she loved him anyway. She was discovered in 1598 by the first person who made sure that her years would be counted. She was born of a state who still felt disconnected and desired to know what it was to be wanted.
~~
As a child she had been discovered first by Spain, and she spent some happy years with him, her first father, before he was driven away for a time. It did not bother her very much, he had already promised to return and despite her sorrow she was sure he would keep his word. However it would be twelve years before he would return.
She spent two years alone again, so much longer and lonelier than those before had been, having had a companion even for a short time, before the second person would discover her. In 1682 France would be the second to stumble upon the child. And she would spend the next ten years with her second father before her first father returned.
It was after this time that things started. She was bounced around between the care of the two of them, her lands split between them, until 1762 when her second father stepped out of her life with little warning, leaving her with Spain until 1800 when he returned. Only to leave again three years later. It would be years later before she discovered that he had ‘abandoned’ her, passing his claims to a different nation, America. And then in 1821 Spain left her alone as well, leaving her and her other ‘siblings’ under the care of Mexico after he recognized her independence. It was during this time period perhaps that she began to become more withdrawn, with tensions between Texas and Mexico and his eventual independence, some of her land was claimed by Texas as well.
And then there was “America”, the United States. It seemed like he didn’t notice her at all for a long time. Her lands were left in the care of her siblings, Utah, Kansas, Nebraska, and New Mexico. It wasn’t until 1861 when she finally got her territory for herself. Then in 1865 her people started a movement for statehood, however despite approval by congress, she was stalled by the president for eleven years.
Perhaps to an adult such things could be understood, but as a child they confused and frightened her. And to an extent, despite being able to understand now at a more adult comprehension, it still left her feeling shaky sometimes and as if perhaps she hadn’t been wanted at all, or at least not as a territory or a state in her own right.

All of this was who she was. She was Colorado. A state known for her love of the outdoors and her unexpected vacations, most of which she was becoming more willing to share rather than spend in the isolation that had been customary for so many years.
But there was one ‘vacation’ that she should not, would not, and could not, share with anyone in the world. For each year on the second day of January, the day of Aveline’s birth Carina Jones would travel to her secret place, and for twelve days, she would sleep the sleep of the dead. Upholding the bargain that was made, to end this tradition, would be to sentence Aveline to a sleep from which she, unlike her counterpart, would never wake. It was a grief that Carina could never inflict upon the parents who cared for Aveline so.
Climbing to the top of the little hill, Carina smiled at the welcome site of the little mausoleum. The inscription on it in a language few others might recognize, marking out the tombs occupant and the purpose for the monument. Walking up to the door she took a smallish golden key out from her bag and silently unlocked the door. Torches lit as soon as the door was open, the flickering flames revealing the marble slab in the middle of the otherwise empty room. Like the outside of the tomb, the inside was simple and un-ornamented.
Carina smiled, this simple place calling out to her, welcoming her.
“I’m home.” She whispered to the white marble, before she turned and closed the door, locking it again to bar entry to those who were not meant to intrude upon this space.
Then with a brief smile she set her bag on the floor and climbed upon the slab resting on her back with her eyes closed, she let out a soft sigh before she breathed no more.
Opening her eyes seventeen year old Aveline looked around her room, shaking off the memories of the last year and preparing for the year to come. Hearing a knock upon the door she opened it and walked into her mother’s welcoming embrace.
“Happy Birthday, sweetheart.”
“I love you mom.”

AN2: Basically what’s been bouncing around my head with how the territory was split between different ‘owners’ at the same time and wasn’t Colorado while some of the others were territories sooner. It basically comes down to what I would compare to Mom & Dad being divorced and being left with one or the other at a time before foster homes and eventual adoption, but even after she’s part of America it still leaves her wondering and a little distant sometimes.
The other bit is that she made a deal with someone and for the price of twelve days of life as Carina she gets one year as Aveline, the mortal girl with a mother she knows cares and wanted her and able to live a normal life with normal friends.
She may acquire Aveline as a middle name.
I'm not sure if any part of this will be 'cannon' for her character.
