The human was back in his woods again today. Lorenzo noted, dark eyes following the child’s movements as she climbed over fallen trees and rocks traveling further into the forest than on her last explore yesterday. Brown braids bounced against her back as, smiling with excitement, she hopped back down to the ground passing the obstacle. The child should know better than to enter the forest, all of the other humans avoided it, they claimed a monster resided there, and they were not wholly wrong.
The demon lightly hopped to the next treetop as he followed her progress, stilling as it caused the branch to move slightly, the leaves rustling. The child looked up for a moment as if sensing her watcher, but had she seen anything at all it would have only been a shadow. For that’s what Lorenzo was, a shadow demon, bound to this forest. Thrice be damned priestesses and their thrice be damned prejudices. He hadn’t ever hurt a soul, hadn’t wanted to. He nearly growled thinking about it.
How was it his fault that people were scared of his shadows? Were afraid of the thing that they couldn’t see, touch, or hear? But here he was, bound to the limits of these trees for the rest of eternity, because one man had a heart attack from seeing a shadow moving. It would have been fine if Lorenzo had just managed to Suggest it away as a figment of his imagination quickly enough.
And then people condemned him as a monster. What had he ever done but try to keep the humans from being slaughtered by those less amiable of his kind in their oblivious little village. He shook his head shaking off those thoughts. Back to business… making sure this human learned to stay out of the woods as well.
Silent as a shadow he slipped down from the tree branches following her progress silently watching from behind trees and scaring off the few predators that were sniffing around. He heard the growl of a wolf from ahead and a startled gasp. Looking over he saw wide frightened brown eyes staring into the face of a hungry wolf. The little girl started backing away slowly, but her foot caught on a rock and she tripped, falling backwards, letting out a little shriek as the wolf prepared to strike.
Lorenzo sprang into action, a blur of movement and shadow blocking the strike and knocking the wolf aside into a tree snapping its spine. Dark eyes looked down at the girl. “You should not have come here.” He said frowning down at the dazed child. But this one was in no shape to be taking herself home. He sighed wrapping the child in shadows and sending out a tendril of power. “Sleep.”
Slowly brown eyes started drifting shut, but just before they did for just a moment they looked straight up into Lorenzo’s…. but that was impossible. He sighed watching the child fall asleep. “He leaned down calling again on those threads of power, whispering in her ear, “You will stay out of the woods. They are dangerous. You will find a safer pastime.” Then he seemed to speak to the shadows, “Return the child to the edge of the woods. Make sure she is safe until the other humans find her.”
There was a slight rustle as if of wind, and the shadows and their cargo vanished. Lorenzo nodded. He wouldn’t have to worry about that one again.

Che!? Lorenzo looked out in shock. He could not be seeing what he thought he was seeing, but there she was again. Bright brown eyes and twin braids peeking around the forest curiously. That shouldn’t be possible. He had Suggested that she would not come back here because it was dangerous and yet here she was. He frowned, slipping out from behind the tree and silently coming up behind her.
The child didn’t see him at all looking curiously at what was around in front of her as she stood atop a large rock in order to see farther around. Lorenzo walked closer just barely making a noise as some stone crunched together. He called upon the threads of power again, whispering in her ear, “You want to go home now. It’s not safe here.”
And that was when the Child let out a startled cry spinning around and beginning to fall off the boulder she had been playing on. Instinctively Lorenzo reached out to catch the child and keep her from hurting herself, forgetting for a moment that it would never work, and then suddenly he was tumbling to the forest floor with an armful of wide brown eyed child. What in the world!?
“O-oh!” The child let out a startled shout, “I – I’m sorry I should have been more careful.” She scrambled off of the startled shadow demon. Turning around to face him her eyes widened, “It’s you! The shadow! Señor Sombra!”
Lorenzo looked at the child in confusion. “You can see me?” He said, pointing at himself.
She giggled at him. “Si! Of course I can see you silly! It’s not like there’s anyone else here to see!”
He just sat there stunned for a moment as she smiled sunnily at him. “I came back to see you!”
Lorenzo frowned sitting up. “You shouldn't be roaming here alone. There are dangerous things here that could hurt a child like you.”
She blinked up at him in some confusion, “But I play here all the time and I’ve been fine.”
He sighed, “Aren’t your parents worried about you?” He got to his feet, brushing off the few bits of dirt that clung stubbornly to his form, “It is dangerous here. Go home.”
“Hm? My parents aren’t around…” For a moment she looked downcast before her face took on a stubborn expression, “And I like playing here!” She laughed, “Besides, if anything dangerous comes you'll protect me. Right, Señor Sombra?” She hugged him.
“Che cosa?” The little girl giggled again at Lorenzo’s confused expression.
“Well you've been watching out for me, right? You saved me from the monster.” She said smiling up at him.
“Girl. That was not the monster they speak of in this forest.” Lorenzo said with a flat look. “That was only a wolf. You should leave before the real monster comes and gets you.” Except that he was the monster and all he intended was to get her out of his forest.
She shook her head stubbornly. “No I want to stay here. I like it here.”
“You cannot stay here.” He reached forward intending to grab her and carry her home but she danced backwards lightly.
“No! I’m not leaving!”
Lorenzo growled softly taking a step forward. “You try my patience child.”
“I’m not going home! I’m not I’m not!” She turned and started running.
Lorenzo growled a few sharp words conjuring shadows snatching up the child and bringing her back to him. “I am ‘the monster’ here you foolish child.” He growled again.
“S- Señor Sombra?” She was looking at him out of the shadows eyes wide with shock and some fear and it made him feel sick to be frightening a child like this.
“You need” he stressed, “to go home. ” He laced the suggestion with as much power as he could.
“N-no!” He was shocked as she still resisted, “I c-can’t.” She hiccupped slightly.
Lorenzo frowned. “And why not?”
“B-because I – I don’t have a home anymore. M-mommy and daddy are d-dead.” She started crying and hiccupping slightly and Lorenzo wasn’t quite sure what to do. “Sleep.” He said, running a hand over her head.
“N-no.” She said stubbornly even as he could feel this suggestion taking hold and her eyes drooping. It shouldn’t take much to get her to stop fighting and go to sleep so he could think. He huffed slightly, feeling a bit ridiculous but starting to sing.
“Chi Beddu stu cappiduzzu
Chi beddu saporito
Quannu mi l’ha mettiri
Quannu mi fazz’u zitu
Scinnu pi lu Cassuru
Scinnu pi li Banneri
E tutti chi me ricuni
Bongiorno Cavaleri.”
It was with some relief that he looked over at the shadows cradling the child and realized that she was asleep. What the hell was he going to do now?
~~~
AN: as far as the shadow thing goes... Lorenzo's something like a ghost in a way.... he can touch inanimate objects, but not people and he's not usually visible as more than a shadow if at all.
AN2: And another appearance of Renny's famous lullaby xD
